Promoted Trends May Mean More Ad Revenue For Twitter
Share |

Twitter's preparing to take another step away from its revenue-less past, according to a new report.  Rumor has it that a fresh "Promoted Trends" feature will complement the system of Promoted Tweets the company's already devised.

Peter Kafka wrote this afternoon, "Advertisers will be able to insert their own term into the list of trends that Twitter displays on users' home pages and on its login page.  Clicking on that term would call up a Twitter search results page, which would feature that advertisers' 'Promoted Tweet' at the top of the results."

(Note: Ian McKellen's announcement doesn't have anything to do with the Promoted Trends concept.  It's just kind of great in its own right, which is why we've left both the trending topics bar and his message undarkened.)

Kafka then added, "Advertisers who have heard Twitter talk about the product say the service imagines charging 'tens of thousands of dollars' a day for exclusive placement rights."

Feel free to let us know what you think of the idea.  It could, of course, prove intrusive or annoying, as ads often do.  Or it might meet with some success (consider this: aren't you more interested in Pepsi, Nike, and Netflix than Justin Bieber?)

Anyway, Twitter's admitted that it will probably run an experiment, but if or when it will implemented Promoted Trends on a wide/permanent basis is hard to say for sure.

Bing Gets a Bunch of New Search Features
Share |

Microsoft has announced the addition of a number of new features to its Bing search engine. The company says it has been examining the trends in search and in feedback, and is working to accommodate these. Microsoft is referring to trends like the demand for faster access to knowledge, offering different user interfaces for different kinds of results, and an increased focus on "getting things done" with search.

Would you use Bing more if it added the right features? Tell us what it's missing.

Bing is rolling out a new "task-focused" version of its home page. It looks relatively the same as before, but when you mouse over different categories, you will get more search options. For example, if you mouse over "Travel," you will get links like "find flights" and "find hotels," and you can conduct your search from there.

New Bing home page

"There is also an interactive Instant Answer that allows you to enter your origin, destination, travel dates and…click…you are in Bing travel," says Bing Product Manager Henry Hall. "Within Bing travel you have fast access to flight purchase recommendations via the price predictor that tells you the least expensive times to fly. In addition to money, you’ll save time as well with Bing travel’s comprehensive flight listing results and links to top travel sites and airlines."

Google Maps for Android Gets Biking Directions and Sharing Features
Share |

google_maps_logo_jun09.pngGoogle Maps for Android just got a nice update for those of us who like to ride our bikes around town. Just in time for National Bike Month, you can now get biking directions on your Android phone. In addition, Google Maps for Android can now highlight dedicated bike-only trails, roads with bike lanes and roads that are good for biking but don't have bike lanes. Google Maps for Android now also includes a new "share this place" feature that allows users to share information about a place by email and on Buzz, Facebook and Twitter.

The updated application is now available in all the countries and languages where Maps is currently available, though the biking directions will only work in the U.S. for now.

iPhone Users Continue to Wait for Google Maps Update

iPhone users can see the bicycling layer in the mobile web version of Google Maps, though this isn't exactly the fastest and most convenient way of accessing this information. Google Maps for iPhone continues to lag behind Google's Android efforts and doesn't feature support f/> [...]

Is This the Answer for Online News Revenue?
Share |

Leading publishers are getting together for what is widely being considered something of a "Hulu for magazines." Publishers involved include Conde Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corporation and Time Inc.

These companies released a joint announcement today saying that they have entered into an independent venture to develop open standards for a new digital storefront and related technology that will "allow consumers to enjoy their favorite media content on portable digital devices."

The idea is that publishers can boost online revenue in a similar fashion to what the companies behind Hulu are doing with online television The publishers say the goal is to create a highly featured common reading application capable of rendering the distinctive look and feel of each publication, a publishing platform optimized for multiple devices, operating systems and screen sizes, a consumer storefront with an extensive selection of publications, and a rich array of advertising opportunities.

The selection of publications will not be limited to just those from the companies involved. They are saying that the venture will welcome other publishers to offer their content as well. Publishers will get their revenue from content and advertising sales, as well as print subscriptions.

John Squires"For the consumer, this digital initiative will provide access to an extraordinary selection of engaging content products, all customized for easy download on the device of their choice, including smartphones, e-readers and laptops," explained John Squire/> [...]
